BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORIENT OF KOREA PART II
1995 The idea for a 2nd Consistory in Korea was first revealed in 1995 by members of Herman E. Duncan Military Consistory #359 living in Seoul and the Camp Casey areas. Illustrious Wilkins was appointed as the Illustrious Commander-In-Chief. The fee to the United Supreme Council for Charters and Rituals were drawn and the same were received. All Scottish Rite Bodies had received their Charters and Rituals. The Council of Deliberation met in Osan and Illustrious Wilkins was deputized by Deputy Vaughn to hold the session. A set of Bylaws were framed to give the flexibility that is required of an organization whose members can usually only meet at its annual conference. The bylaws was adopted at this session and sent to the United Supreme Council. Illustrious sirs; Gale M. Collins, George Pratt, Jr. Steven Pressley,, Peter M. Simmons, Bradley Swint, and Ishmal A. Webb received the Thirty-Third degree.
1996 The Council of Deliberation met in Seoul and Illustrious Wilkins was deputized by Deputy Vaughn to hold the session. That year, the United Supreme Council met in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Due to the death of our Grand Chancellor, Frank Allen, a special election was held and Illustrious Deary Vaughn was elected Chancellor for the United Supreme Council. He is also serving as Deputy for Korea. Illustrious Sirs; Wayne Crockett, James E. McCall, and Whalen A. Whitmore received the Thirty-Third degree.
1997 Illustrious Vaughn met with Illustrious Wilkins to discuss his recommendation to the Supreme Council to become a Sovereign Grand Inspector General “Active” member of the United Supreme Council, 33 and the Deputy for Korea. The minutes of the October 1997 executive session indicate Sovereign Grand Commander S.J. Bennett recommended that Illustrious A.K. Wilkins becomes a Sovereign Grand Inspector General “Active” member of the United Supreme Council, 33. And be appointed as Deputy for Korea. This action was approved. Illustrious Wilkins became the second Deputy for the Orient of Korea. While serving as the District Deputy Grand Master, Illustrious Wilkins traveled to Okinawa, Japan to answer the call of Prince Hall Masons were desirous of setting up a lodge under the Oklahoma jurisdiction. He, along with his Special Deputy Charles L. Perkins, set up the lodge A.K. Wilkins Military Lodge No. 56, Okinawa.
Illustrious James M. Carter received the Thirty-Third degree.
1998 During his tenure in office a 3rd Consistory was organized and established in Okinawa, Japan for the Southern Jurisdiction. Illustrious Wilkins, Illustrious Charles L. Perkins,33 Illustrious Ishmal A. Webb, 33, Illustrious James A. McCall and Illustrious Leonard Braham, 32 traveled to Okinawa to set up Nero Prince Consistory No 371. The first Illustrious Commander-In-Chief was Illustrious Leon Hammond, 32. All Scottish Rite Bodies had received their Charters and Rituals In addition, two Assemblies Order of the Golden Circle were chartered and they are: Light of the Morning Calm Assembly No. 370, Seoul, Korea and Guiding Light Assembly No. 371, Okinawa, Japan. Light of the Morning Calm Assembly No. 370 had its inception in November, 1997, as the ACS building, in Yongsan, Korea. The Council of Deliberation met in Seoul and Illustrious Wilkins held the session. This was the first year the Council conducted an Education Symposium for the Prince Hall Families in Korea. The initiation of 32 members was conducted by "Guiding Light” Assembly No. 371 Valley of Okinawa, by permission of Deputy Wilkins, with the approval of the Sovereign Grand Commander, Illustrious S.J. Bennett. The officers were elected and installed. The first Loyal Lady Ruler was Loyal Lady Renee Tucker. Guiding Light Assembly #371, on January 27, 1998, twelve ladies met with Illustrious A.K. Wilkins at Kadena Officers’ Club to explore the possibility of forming an Order of the Golden Circle, Auxiliary to the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Prince Hall Affiliation, on Okinawa Under the direction of Loyal Lady Essie M. Rash of Guiding Light Assembly the Ladies were enthusiastic about forming a Golden Circle. Illustrious Deputy A. K. Wilkins instructed them to work as a Club, to prove sincerity and to show that interest was more than temporary. Guiding Light Assembly operated eleven months with twenty six members. On June 4, 1998, Illustrious Wilkins received permission from Sovereign Grand Commander S.J. Bennett to organize the State Grand Assembly in the Orient of Korea. Accordingly, at the Dragon Hill Lodge Hotel, Yongsan, in July, 1998 the Korea State Grand Assembly was organized. The State Grand Loyal Lady Ruler was Loyal Lady Essie M. Rash. The Commanders of the Rite was organized on May 8, 1998 with Illustrious Wilkins, 33° as the First President. The Council of Deliberation continues to donate to The Charitable Foundation of the United Supreme Council. And have taken on the project on providing “Portraits” of our distinguished members of the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry
1999 Our Sovereign Grand Commander, S.J. Bennett was called from labor to refreshment. The Council of Deliberation met in Seoul and Illustrious Wilkins held the session. This was the second year the Council conducted an Education Symposium for the Prince Hall Families in Korea. Herman E. Duncan Military Consistory celebrated it 10th Anniversary. Illustrious Sirs; Joseph T. Penn, Everett Davis, Herbert Hart, Leonard Branham, Charles P. Ervin, Jr. received the Thirty-Third degree.
2000 The Council of Deliberation met in Seoul and Illustrious Wilkins held the session. Illustrious Deary Vaughn is elected to Lt Grand Commander. Illustrious Sirs; Bruce L. Brown, Sherman Carter, Charles C. Caulk, Leon T. Hammond, Floyd Sullivan and Richard Willis received the Thirty-third degree.
2001 The Council of Deliberation met in Seoul. Illustrious Wilkins presided over the session. The Council of Deliberation celebrated it 10th Anniversary. Lt Grand Commander Vaughn attended the celebration and session. The Mentorship Program was adopted. Illustrious Sirs; Paul Lee and Abdur Rahim Saafir received the Thirty-third degree.
2002 The Council of Deliberation met in Seoul Illustrious presided. The Orient Orientation Program was presented and adopted. Illustrious Tomas’ Hawkins received the Thirty-third degree.
2003 The Council of Deliberation met in Seoul Illustrious presided. No candidates were recommended for the Thirty-third degree. Illustrious Deary Vaughn is elected Sovereign Grand Commander.
2004 The Council of Deliberation met in Seoul Illustrious presided. No candidates were recommended for the Thirty-third degree.
2005 The Council of Deliberation met in Seoul. Deputy Wilkins presided. The Unveiling of the Portraits Program was presented and adopted. The resolution was presented that each class for the Thirty-third degree from the Orient of Korea will make a contribution to the Council of Deliberation for the program. Portraits of Prince Hall Scottish leaders will be “oiled” and presented to the United Supreme Council during its annual session. Illustrious sirs; Willie F. Bake IV, and Richard Fulton received the Thirty-third degree.
2006 The Council of Deliberation met in Seoul. Deputy Wilkins presided. Illustrious sirs; Carlos S. Davis, Jeffrey P.K. Graham, Clarence G. Johnson, Sr., Samuel L. Jones, Raymond Pequeno, III, Gerado M. Sanchez, Michael Williams received the Thirty-Third degree.
2007 The Council of Deliberation met in Seoul. Deputy Wilkins presided. Illustrious sirs; Shelve Brock, Donny Elvoid, Timothy Finney, Anthony Houzah, Randy Nabors, Gregory D. Pace, Leon L. Rogers, Reginald Williams received the Thirty-Third degree.
************* We have had two deputies to serve the Orient of Korea since it was originated in 1991. Dr Deary Vaughn is serving as Most Worshipful Grand Master, Jurisdiction of Oklahoma. And he is currently the Sovereign Grand Commander. Illustrious Wilkins is an Honorary Grand Master of Oklahoma and is currently serving as the Deputy of the Orient. Both are active members in the United Supreme Council. Through the years, many distinguished men have become members of the Orient of Korea. Although this list is not comprehensive of all, we would like to mention a few; Illustrious Richard D. Watson, 33 Illustrious Charles L. Perkins, 33, Illustrious Mar A. Rowden, 33, Illustrious Charles C. Caulk, 33, Illustrious James E. McCall and Illustrious Robert Jones and Illustrious Floyd Sullivan. In a meeting Illustrious Wilkins stated, “It is to my fellow Scottish Rite colleagues and friends that I owe a debt of gratitude and a Masonic career filled with accomplishments never dreamed of while serving in Freemasonry. Freemasonry provided me with opportunities to gain experience in public speaking, publishing articles, and professional service. What other organization can you join as a member and gain a family for life? |
